Zhenjiang City launched the protection month of Yangtze finless porpoises, an iconic species in the country''s longest river Yangtze, on November 13. The city will organize activities to raise the public awareness of the species and carry out river cleanup in the month-long campaign. The city's nature reserve for Yangtze finless porpoises will soon start building “hospitals” for the endangered species. This program means setting up floating devices and getting ready the equipment and medicines to enhance emergency rescue and treatment of the species.
Established in 2002, the nature reserve is home to about 25 Yangtze finless porpoises all year-round. Last year, Zhenjiang initiated the establishment of the first local Yangtze finless porpoise conservation alliance in China.
