During the visit of California Governor Gavin Newsom to the Wetland Rare Birds National Nature Reserve in Yancheng, Newsom and his wife were encouraged to name a red-crowned crane “California” as the bird followed the visitors during their tour.

Newsom started his weeklong trip to China on Oct. 23, and visited northern Jiangsu’s Yancheng City on Oct. 28, where he and officials of Jiangsu signed a memorandum of understading on climate change and environmental cooperation between the provincial government and the government of the state of California.

The two sides also discussed desalination, wind-to-hydrogen and other issues while planning for more mutually beneficial cooperation.

Yancheng is home to the world''s largest winter habitat for the red-crowned crane.

With a coast line of 582 kilometers and a wetland area of 769,700 hectares, Yancheng boasts the largest and the most well protected coastal wetland along the west bank of Pacific Ocean and on the edge of Asian continent, making it an important stopover for mirgratory bird species on the East Asia-Australasian flyway. The city’s coastal wetlands was listed as World Heritage Site in 2019.
