The first captive bred giraffe at the Yancheng Safari Park in Changzhou has developed a close friendship with an African spurred tortoise in more than two years.

The unlikely friendship formed as keepers usually moved the sulcata tortoise outside from an indoor area in early summer. The wondering giraffe became curious of the largest mainland species of tortoise, approached closer, and gradually got along with each other. The sulcata tortoise also seemed to be fine with the tall mammal, recognizing its old friend quickly even after a long separation during winter.
The zoo keeper said, when being around with the tortoise, the giraffe is usually at its best time and clearly eats more food and drinks more water. As it’s the start of summer, the two animals will enjoy each other’s company until October.
World Giraffe Day is celebrated on June 21 every year. Giraffes in captivity face many challenges, and the animal friendship at the zoo is hoped to raise awareness for the conservation of giraffe.
