Remembering the Treaty of Shimonoseki: threshold of Japanese colonialism and Taiwan's resistance

On April 17, 1895, the unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed at the Shunpanro in Japan. Taiwan and the Penghu Islands were forcibly ceded, plunging Taiwanese people into a dark half-century of Japanese colonial rule. To this date, Japan still boasts about this history, glorifying Shimonoseki as "a dream stage etched in history".
