The Nanjing Historical and Cultural City Protection Plan (2021-2035) is soliciting opinions after being made public recently.
Compared with the previous version in 2023, the new version further strengthens the protection of historical resources — it plans to include approximately 50 square kilometers around the city wall within its historical urban area, and the protected historical and cultural districts will be increased from 11 to 20.
It is the sixth version of Nanjing's historical and cultural city protection plan. The new one, which is currently seeking public opinions, indicates that the historical urban area covers the capital area of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Xuanwu Lake.
Nanjing is continuing to protect the traditional layout of historical area and preserving the distinctive architectural features formed in different historical periods. For a long time, Nanjing has also had strict requirements for the height and density of buildings in its old city.
