A pumped-storage power station located in Biancheng Town, Jurong City, plays an important role in peak shaving and frequency regulation, helping maintain the  stability of the Yangtze River Delta power grid.

A pumped-storage power station is a large-scale energy storage facility that helps balance electricity supply and demand. It functions like a giant rechargeable battery: during periods of low demand, surplus electricity is used to pump water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir; when demand increases, the stored water is released through turbines, generating electricity once again.

This 182.3-meter-high dam, built within the original Lunshan valley, has achieved three world records. It is the tallest dam of any pumped-storage power station, the highest asphalt-concrete-faced rockfill dam (a key waterproofing technique), and the largest reservoir basin -filling project in the world.

This year, Jiangsu became the first province in the Yangtze River Delta with over 100 GW of installed new-energy capacity. This is a major milestone in reducing carbon emissions, but it also brings significant challenges for grid stability.

"When renewable energy such as wind and solar power are connected to the grid, they cause fluctuations. Peak shaving and frequency regulation are essential to ensure safety," explained a project manager. The pumped-storage power station can operate in coordination with nuclear power, wind power, the West-to-East power transmission project, UHV AC project, and large coal-fired plants, effectively easing the pressure caused by rapid load growth.
