The Jiangsu Provincial People's Government held a press conference on March 2 to introduce the latest achievements of the new round of Taihu Lake governance.

In recent years, the ecological environment quality of Taihu Lake has steadily improved, making it the first among the three major lakes under key national governance to have its water quality reach Class III.

In 2025, the total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations in the entire Taihu Lake were 0.046 mg/L and 0.99 mg/L respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 8% and 23.3% respectively, both reaching the best levels since the start of monitoring.

The number of species in the Taihu Lake Basin has reached 7,179, an increase of 280 species compared to the previous round of investigation. Among them, there are 150 species of key protected animals and plants. Each winter, a large number of red-billed gulls fly from Siberia to the Taihu Lake, becoming the most intuitive evidence of the ecological recovery of the Taihu Lake.

According to the conference, Jiangsu will formulate a ten-year action plan for the comprehensive management of Taihu Lake and steadily advance the revision of the "Regulations on the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution in Taihu Lake Basin of Jiangsu Province".
