Nanjing has announced a proposal for the protection and exhibition of the ruins of Tongji Gate, the largest of the 13 gates of Nanjing's Ming Dynasty City Wall.
The City Wall, built in the early Ming Dynasty, represents an important period of urban construction and development, and originally integrated with natural mountains and rivers.
Archaeological excavations in 2016 uncovered the ruins of Tongji Gate, and then the city proposed an open-air preservation and display plan.
According to the design renderings, a sunken plaza will be built on the southwest side of the site, with riverside steps leading to the inner Qinhuai River. The design aims to allow visitors to approach the waterfront and explore the cultural heritage of the City Wall up close.
